The Legalities of FPV Drone Flying - A Recreational Flying Guide

Our everyday living consists of following various general rules and regulations. Just like you may be following the road safety rules while driving your vehicles, some air space rules are equally important for recreational FPV drone flying. For flyers in the United States, the FAA or the Federal Aviation Administration lays down certain guidelines for people to follow while flying FPV drones depending on the purposes of flying. Let’s look at some of these rules for recreational flyers:
Registration - The drones that weigh between 0.55 pounds (250 grams) and 55 pounds (25 kilograms) must be registered with the FAA. Registration can be done online through the FAA Drone Zone Portal
Flying Rules - There are some safety guidelines which are important to follow:
Fly within your visual line of sight (VLOS).
Always give the right of way to manned aircraft.
Avoid flying over people, stadiums, and other public events.
Fly at or below 400 feet above ground level, unless you’re flying within a 400-foot radius of a structure.
Do not fly near other aircraft or airports.
No Fly Zones - Some restricted airspaces always need to be avoided. These are airports, heliports, or any other sensitive areas. The FAA provides resources such as the B4UFLY mobile app: Fly Smart to help drone operators identify airspace restrictions and other safety information.
Respect Other People’s Privacy - Never fly over someone’s private property without prior permission. It’s important to always respect people’s privacy rights.
Safety Guidelines - These guidelines are just some hygiene factors to check before flying your FPV drones. Check your battery charging, any airspace restrictions, or no-fly zones nearby, and check all the allied types of equipment of your FPV drones.
